Seminar on "Application Of Value Management In Architectural Services Department"

Li, Ho-kin is a founding member and a Value Management Facilitator (List A) of the Hong Kong Institute of Value Management of the HKIVM. Mr. Li joined the Architectural Services Department in 1992 and now he is working as the Chief Architect. The Architectural Services Department (ArchSD), one of the Works Department of HKSAR, which Mr. Li works for, is also a strong advocate of the VM process. The Department conducts a number of VM workshops every year. ArchSD uses VM for all projects over HK$200 million, applies VM at several key stages of the development process. They carried out 24 major studies since 1994, using fully qualified and experienced VM facilitators. Examples of ArchSD VM studies included Wetland Park, Mongkok Stadium, Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse, Stanley Prison Development, School Improvement Programme. Mr. Li’s presentation will be on examples of VM workshops that ArchSD has conducted over the years, the key findings in these workshops and experience learnt in preparing and conducting them.

PSDAS Programme - A series of VM Workshops & Seminars by International Experts

Value Management (VM) has been used since 1947 in America to assist management, architects and engineering professionals to obtain optimum value for each dollar spent. Typical savings range from 10% to 15% for most projects. As construction professionals, we should not only acquire technical knowledge but must also develop various management skills for setting the team goals. A series of interactive VM workshops and seminars in different critical VM phases and the international successful VM application will be conducted in the periods of 16-19 Nov 2007 and 17-19 Jan 2008 (see table below). All these practical knowledge and skills can enhance the competitiveness of construction professionals in a regional context

Seminar on "Best Value, Value Management and the Sustainability Agenda"

Professor John R Kelly, the Chair of Construction Innovation in the School of the Built and Natural Environment, Glasgow Caledonian University, UK, will deliver a presentation on 25/10/2007. John will report on the progress of Best Value within the public sector in the UK, the place of value management and tools and techniques, including a new approach to whole life costing, designed to meet the sustainability agenda. The talk will be followed by a discussion of the application of value management methodologies in the context of sustainability in Hong Kong.

Seminar on "Add value to Ocean Park"

We have arranged this public seminar in conjunction with the Department of Building and Real Estate of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to bring the experiences of the Ocean Park redevelopment project to design and construction professionals. In this seminar, Daniel Altier, the General Construction Manager for Dragages (HK) JV, will present the details of this project and talk through how the problems encountered were overcome. He will explain how Partnering and Value Engineering benefited all parties involved.

Development and Application of Value Management in Korea

VM is widely adopted by both manufacturing and construction industries in Korea. Some Koreans were invited to give presentation in the United Stated in the SAVE conference. This seminar will be presented by Prof. Hyun (president of Korea Construction VE Research Institute) and Prof. Hong. They will introduce the development of VM and the latest application of VM in Korea.

Tony Toy Memorial Award


Introduction

The Tony Toy Memorial Award is established to acknowledge and remember the outstanding services and commitment of our founding president Mr. Tony Toy to this Institute. This shall be a regular award, to be presented at each HKIVM International Conference, to students of any discipline based on the quality of research projects/dissertations relating to value management.

Details

To qualify, the dissertations should have been accepted as part of any recognised degree of study (Bachelor, Postgraduate Diploma, Master or Doctorate) in Hong Kong and China within two years of the proceeding HKIVM International Conference (typically held every 18 months).

1.

The awards will be based on the quality of the dissertations submitted to the Award Assessment Committee.

2.

Two separate sets of awards will be arranged for students from Hong Kong and from Mainland China.

3.

A maximum of six awards will be given at each International Conference for students in Hong Kong and China.

The Memorial award recipients in both locations will be invited and sponsored (up to HK$4,000 to cover travelling and registration expenses) to present their papers at the International VM Conference organised by HKIVM.

The submission of the paper to the HKIVM International Conference and presentations must be in English and with full acknowledgments.

HKIVM reserves the right to review each year at the AGM and to agree on the level of the award for the following International Conference.
